Warning signs to look for
- An unexpected warning that insists you phone a support number.
- A stranger asking to control your computer or watch you log in to your bank.
- A demand for payment to fix a problem you did not know you had.
What you can do
- Do not call the number in the pop-up or install software at the caller’s request.
- Close the browser window. If you need help, contact a support provider you already trust.
- If you granted access, disconnect the device from the internet. Use a different trusted device to secure important accounts, and get trusted technical help.
Talk about it together
Try starting with:
“If a warning pops up, you can stop and ask me. You don’t have to solve it while someone is on the phone.”
